We’re assembling a world-class team in Helsinki and Reykjavik. Are you eager to level up?

A team excursion in Iceland is the the best design inspiration.

We are looking for an experienced Lead Animator to join our pan-Nordic team of industry pioneers building the world’s first cloud-native MMO. As an integral part of our character team, you will strengthen our vision for the game and bring to reality a world that our players can call home. You will be responsible for both in-house and outsourced animation work. You will structure the work for a game-as-service and manage the quality as well as the schedule for work. Can you tick these boxes?

  • You are great at communicating and organizing. As a team lead you will inspire, give feedback and mentor the animation team and help to envision the animation and style for the game.
  • You know how to supervise, but can also work hands-on, when needed.
  • You work well together with technical artists, character artists, riggers and game design representing the animation discipline in the design process.
  • You have extensive knowledge with high end in-game animation, motion capture work, pipelines and tools, preferably also working with Unreal and creating animation graphs.
  • You are fluent in English and are prepared to travel occasionally (when the world allows). The role is based in either Helsinki or Reykjavik, but we are also open to discuss a remote role.

  • You are fluent in English and are prepared to travel occasionally (when the world allows). The role is based in either Helsinki or Reykjavik, but we are also open to discuss a remote role.

At Mainframe we are building a living world that people will call their home for years and hopefully decades. This world lives in the cloud and will through the years of its operations become the setting for complex social drama that involves potentially millions of people around the clock and around the world. The underlying architecture and infrastructure to sustain such a world for years involves all the complexity involved with running a modern informatic society.

We are looking for someone that would immediately have a clear understanding of how to build and design such a service, both in terms of existing cloud services from such platforms providers as AWS, Google and Azure. We are looking for someone that is intimately familiar with the various stacks used in modern application servers and knows how to scale them and make them robust and secure for millions of users with four nines reliability.

In the end the service will consist of hundreds of application servers running off massive databases, orchestrating thousands of Unreal Server and millions of GPU streaming instances, across all regions in the world and all monitored and hooked into an analytics backbone.

This will not be built in a day, but we are looking for someone that would have a clear idea of where to start, has had the experience of building such systems and operating them and would know what people to hire to scale the development and operation.

For a cloud architect this is probably as close as you will ever come to be the actual architect in Matrix.

As a Cloud Architect you will take part in the design and implementation of the backbone of a massively multiplayer online game delivered as a streaming experience. You will be responsible for evaluating and choosing suitable technological solutions and incorporating them into the service. You will be responsible for creating persistent business logic for game systems, both as REST API based endpoints and as persistent data through various DB solutions.

  • You have experience in designing and implementing scalable cloud-based services for AWS and other cloud platforms.
  • You have experience deploying web based services, for example based on Python frameworks (Flask, FastAPI) but are also familiar with other languages and concepts used in cloud engineering (Lua, Go, REST, OAuth,..).
  • You have experience of working with platform-as-a-service technology such as Docker, Kubernetes and AWS managed container services.
  • You have experience of SQL databases (such as PostgreSQL) but also other data handling technology such as Redis, Hadoop and MongoDB.
  • You have experience in gathering status, logs and metrics from services and monitoring those for insights and signs of problems.
  • You have experience in managing Unreal servers or other similar session based online engines.

We are looking for a Senior Gameplay Engineer to work on a demanding and inspiring cloud native MMO project. You will be working side by side with a world class team of professionals, designing and implementing game systems in C++ and using Unreal Engine.

  • You have a deep experience in designing and implementing game systems in C++
  • A solid knowledge of Unreal is a huge advantage
  • Experience with multi-user online gameplay is a great bonus
  • You are used to working closely with game designers in elaborating a system design that combines game design goals with technological considerations and limitations

Do you want to be a part of building the game of a lifetime?

At Mainframe we are building a living world that people will call their home for years and hopefully decades. This world lives in the cloud and will through the years of its operations become the setting for complex social drama that involves potentially millions of people around the clock and around the world.

Your  mission as a Gameplay / System Designer would be to design and implement new systems and game features, starting from prototyping and ending with final implementation with a full feature team. You would work together and maintain communication with other designers to accelerate prototype iterations. You would internalize the motivations of our target audience groups, be cognizant of their desires and dislikes and help the design team at large to make considerations for player needs.

While this is primarily a game design role some engineering competence or proficiency with UE4 blueprints is needed.

Outcomes we would like to see you accomplish in the first 12-18 months:

  • You are a trusted design resource that is able to run a small and autonomous feature team. You represent player experience and needs in team discussions and make sure that player value is represented in team goals during planning.
  • You are the “go to” person for “all things” related to a set of systems or features you are shepherding. You’ve built a deep understanding of their inner workings and are able to predict how they’ll work in a dynamic multiplayer environment, especially where they interface with other systems and features.
  • You openly share work and proactively seek feedback through design critique and playtests of your team’s prototypes. You have a proven ability of taking a design concept through iterative prototyping and delivering a high quality feature that is production ready.

Competencies that will help you reach your targets:

  • 3+ years of experience as a technically-oriented gameplay or system designer, with multiplayer experience
  • Proficiency with Unreal Engine 4 Blueprints
  • Broad taste in games
  • Passion for social multiplayer games
  • Deep understanding of player motivations and needs in MMOs
  • Experience with setting up state machines, animation controllers, VFX & SFX or UI are all a big plus

At Mainframe we are building a living world that people will call their home for years and hopefully decades. This world lives in the cloud and will through the years of its operations become the setting for complex social drama that involves potentially millions of people around the clock and around the world.

Your mission as a Content Designer would be to become an expert at designing and implementing gameplay content. You would initially focus on content needs for a limited set of connected features that make up for a segment of the game (for example the authoring of enemy NPCs/AI, player progression/abilities, player housing construction or resource gathering & crafting recipes). You would help the team make improvements to our content framework. You would stress test the content authoring processes and identify inefficiencies and work with engineers to fix them. You would collect playtest feedback for new content and build a deep understanding of all of the progression and content variables that determine the scope of content needed for long term retention and similarly identify what content has a high ROI when it comes to engagement.

While this is primarily a content design role - the requirements also include engineering competency or at least proficiency with UE4 blueprints.

Outcomes we would like to see you accomplish in the first 12-18 months:

  • You are a trusted content design resource that is able to run a small and autonomous gameplay team. You communicate proactively to important partners outside the team and collaborate with other experts on your team to meet project milestones as a team unit.
  • You have discovered best practices for designing and producing a large volume of content for features of your focus area. The content created is affordable to players and immediately communicates that the game has vast depth (as opposed to being convoluted and complex). You have created realistic long-term plans for content implementation (gameplay systems and tools).
  • You share learnings of your content team with other teams on the project that are also producing content or setting up content authoring frameworks. Conversely, you incorporate learnings from other teams and you are an advocate for maintaining consistency across feature development. You develop and proactively advocate best practices to the content team at large.

Competencies that will help you reach your targets:

  • 3+ years of experience as a technically-oriented content designer, with multiplayer experience
  • Proficiency with Unreal Engine 4 Blueprints
  • Broad taste in games
  • Passion for social multiplayer games
  • Experience with performing gameplay balancing on very large sets of data
  • Experience with writing SQL queries is a big +
  • Experience with level design is also a big +
